Scouts Build New Grundy Forest Bridge

On Saturday the 21st of March, our Intern from MTSU Airen Mangrum got together with Bear Den scouts from Dunlap (Sequatchie County) and built a bridge on the Grundy Forest Day loop. Their troop, 3133, spent the day hammering away and finished at about 4pm. All day long we had beautiful weather and many hikers come through. Several stopped to thank the boys and told us the bridge had been needed for a long time.

The creek crossing can be sometimes dangerous depending on rainfall. Pictured are (left to right) Intern Airen Mangrum with (scouts) Alexander, Seth,Geratt, Alexander B, and William. Each scout is pictured with their dad who also lended a helping hand.

Easy: Pick up trash around day loop
Medium: Cut back problem privet areas
Hard: Stabilization work (stone steps, water bar clean out, etc.)

We will finish at about 1:00 PM and have lunch available and a short Ranger presentation.

Please contact Peggy Cregor if you will be able to join us. It is important that we know who is coming for lunch orders and in case we have to cancel because of rain. You can reach Peggy at:

In the mean time, here is a form you can complete if you are interested in working as a volunteer.

Friends Trail Project Volunteer Work Day April 26

April 26, 2008 at 10:00 AM CDT

Members of the Friends of South Cumberland are invited to gather April 26 at Grundy Forest (Fiery Gizzard Trailhead) for the organization’s first trail maintenance project in partnership with the Tennessee Trails Association.

Volunteers will gather at 10 a.m. at the Grundy Forest pavilion. Tools will be provided, but everyone is asked to bring gloves and wear work clothes and boots or hiking shoes. Each person should also bring a lunch and extra water.

The day won’t be all work. There will be an opportunity for some hiking. A program about wild turkeys will be followed by a picnic supper at the pavilion sponsored by the Friends.

Park Ranger Anthony Jones will direct the project, which he has divided into two parts, removing privet and clearing rocks where the trail has eroded. He said the work will not be strenuous.

Persons who plan to attend are asked to call Latham Davis at 931-598-5101 or send an email to lathamdavis@bellsouth.net.
