Friends Email News

April 21, 2008

Greetings,

A couple of quick news items this morning:

Friends Volunteer Work Day April 26 at 10 AM CDT

Members of the Friends of South Cumberland are invited to gather April 26 at Grundy Forest (Fiery Gizzard Trailhead) for the organization’s first trail maintenance project in partnership with the Tennessee Trails Association.

Volunteers will gather at 10 a.m. at the Grundy Forest pavilion. Tools will be provided, but everyone is asked to bring gloves and wear work clothes and boots or hiking shoes.  A picnic lunch will be served about 1:30 PM.  After lunch you can hike or depart at your convenience.

Park Ranger Anthony Jones will direct the project, which he has divided into two parts, removing privet and clearing rocks where the trail has eroded. He said the work will not be strenuous.

Persons who plan to attend are asked to call Latham Davis at 931-598-5101 or send an email to
lathamdavis@bellsouth.net.

Last Guided Wildflower Hike of the Season

Sunday, April 27, 2008  10:00 AM    Collins Gulf Hike  -  Meet Mary Priestley at the Collins West parking lot for a hike on the Collins West Trail.

Hike Volunteers

The Friends are coordinating trips to Savage Gulf for 5th graders planned for 4 days coming up soon. We are looking for one or more Friends members to accompany the trips April 24, May 1, and May 5.  Requirements are to be at the Savage Gulf Ranger Station and hike to Savage Falls (4 miles round trip) on a ranger-led hike with the 5th graders, their teachers, and some parents. You'd be going as the representative of the Friends, and would be great if you could take some pictures.

If you are interested please contact Mary Priestley marypriestley@bellsouth.net
