William T. Patten Passes

Former Friends board member and treasurer for many years, The Rev. William Thomas Patten died peacefully on Sunday, Dec. 30, 2007, at age 83.  Bill was responsible for helping the Friends gain 501(c)3 nonprofit status and did an outstanding job of guiding the board on financial matters in the early years of the organization.  He was a great friend of the Park.

Mr. Patten served in the U.S. Army in Europe in World War II and received the Purple Heart medal. Upon graduation from Princeton University, he worked in marketing and was vice president of the Chattanooga Medicine Co. (now Chattem).

He had a second career as an automobile dealer and at one time owned three dealerships in Chattanooga and Dalton.

Later in life he answered the call to the ministry and became an ordained priest in the Episcopal Church. He was rector of Grace Church, Paris, Tn.; Church of the Nativity, Fort Oglethorpe; and St.  Alban’s, Hixson. He loved the church, having been raised at St.  Paul’s Church, Chattanooga, and he was an active member of Church of the Good Shepherd.

He and his wife, Lynn, retired to Sewanee, Tn., where he served as interim priest at area churches and director of the DuBose Conference Center.

He provided accounting services to nonprofit organizations, including the Friends of South Cumberland State Recreation Area, the Cloud Forest School Foundation and the Sewanee Recycling Center.

He had many interests, including gardening, flying his airplane and fishing in the Everglades. He enjoyed painting, writing and singing and playing music with his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George Holmes Patten and Margaret Patten Kruesi, and siblings George H. and Charlotte Patten, Anne Elizabeth Patten Pettway and George Zeboim Patten.

He is survived by Lynn Chapin Patten, his wife of 59 years, and his sister, Margaret Patten Smith. His children include Mary (Mac) Patten Priestley, George Holmes Patten, W. Thomas (Kathy) Patten, Anne Elizabeth Patten and Dorris (John) Patten Shober. He was “Grandfather” to William (Dawn) Montgomery, Thomas Carter and Lynn Patten Priestley, Margaret Garlington, George Reilly, John Thomas, Daniel Carter Patten. Sarah Patten and Peter Thomas Beairsto. He also is survived by many nieces and nephews to whom he was known affectionately as “Uncle B.”

The funeral will be held Wednesday at Church of the Good Shepherd, Lookout Mountain.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Orange Grove Center, 505 Derby St., Chattanooga, TN 37404.

Arrangements are by Wann Funeral Home.

Woolly Adelgid Update

The Woolly Adelgid, which is a fatal pest to hemlock treeks, is being tracked in East Tennessee.  Here is a current report from Clint Strohmeier, Forest Health Specialist, Tennessee Dept. Agriculture, Forestry Division:

After spending the last several days surveying for Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA), here is what I have found:
  • HWA is now in northern Roane Co.  I found in a residential woodlot next to Little Emory River just east of Hwy. 27 out of Harriman.
  • HWA is now in eastern Morgan Co.  Park Manager Dave Engebretson and I found it along the main drag at Frozen Head SP.  I couldn't find it anywhere else in the eastern part of Morgan Co., however.
  • HWA is not in Fentress or Pickett Counties as far as I can tell.  I couldn't find it in Pickett SP or Forest, nor in Lone Mtn. SF.  I couldn't find it in Scott SF either.
Next, I will survey other parts of Roane County along with Rhea, Meigs, and Bradley Counties, provided there is enough hemlock to survey in some of these counties.

Savage Gulf Water Source Update

Water availability for backpackers and hikers is still spotty.  Read this current report in the Friends' blog:
