Seasons greetings,

A few quick news items for you today:

January Activities Now Online

Planned activities for January are now online at www.friendsofscsra.org/activities.htm.

Governor Bredesen Announces Heritage Conservation Trust Fund Grants

Grants include leveraged funding for Grundy County conservation project

Nashville, Tennessee - Governor Phil Bredesen and the members of the Heritage Conservation Trust Fund Board, along with Senator Jeffy Cooper and Representative Bill Harmon, announced on December 6 that nine project protecting more than 14,455 acres have been approved for $7.1 million in grant funding.  Read the complete release at www.friendsofscsra.org/news.htm

Water Conditions for Wilderness Hikers Improving

Recent modest rains have improved water conditions for backpackers at Savage Gulf.  We are still dry but things are improvinvg

Ranger Jamie Hambrock advises:  On the Stone Door side of the Park all normally reliable water sources have water. Many seasonal streams and springs are still dry.  Visitors who never have been here also need to realize that the streams like Big creek, Collins and Savage creeks flow underground in many places.  Sometimes they see on the map a stream and assume it will be a reliable water source.

If you are planning a wilderness adventure in the Park, it is always a good idea to check the lastest information with the Rangers.  They are on the ball!

Server Problem Disrupts Email

If you recently sent a contact form via the Friends website and did not get a reply, we had a problem with a network change that disrupted our email for perhaps as long as two weeks.  After a day of hair pulling and teeth gnashing we got it worked out.  Regrets for the problem, please communicate again, thanks.

Santa Visits South Cumberland Early

The Park's letter to Santa this year (www.friendsofscsra.org/south-cumberland-wish-list.htm) has perked up Santa's interest.  The Rangers now have three new GPS units with cases thanks to Santa's helper, Oscar Fitzgerald, and another one of Santa's helpers purchased a much needed gun safe for the Visitor Center to store the Ranger's shotguns and ammunition.  Thank to all who do good things to make our Park the best possible in the best state park system in the nation.

Treasurer Phil Johnson Is Recovering

Friends board member, treasurer and great friend of the Park recently underwent some major surgery that will have him flying low perhaps until Christmas.  He is doing well and chomping at the bit to get back in action.  He is in room 1132, Adams Place Health Center, 1927 Memorial Blvd., Murfreesboro, TN 37129. Phone is 615-869-1132.  I know he will appreciate hearing from you.

=====

I don't know if we will have any additional news before the holidays, so on behalf of the staff at South Cumberland and the Friends board, I wish you happy holidays, a merry Christmas and the best for the new year.

Holiday cheers,
